World War 1st

June 28th 1914: a Serbian terrorist killed in Sarajevo the Austrian-Hungarian heir Franz Ferdinand and his wife. The attempts of mediation between the two parts failed: exactly a month later (July 28th) Austria declared war on Serbia. It started that way a tragic war period that lasted 5 years, involved all the countries worldwide, divided between central empires and alliance powers, and indirectly caused a new drama 20 years later.

Motion and trench warfare
The first phase of the war was characteristic as a "motion warfare" imposed above all by the German offensive strategy but soon appeared a tiring "trench warfare". Italy entered the war May 24th 1915.

The Altopiano: a strategic zone
In a general context of trench warfare, the Altopiano of Asiago assumed a vital importance; for the Austrians the conquest of the Altopiano would mean free access to the Po flatland. After ups and downs, the Austrians were rejected but the consequences of World War 1st were catastrophic for the villages of the Altopiano.

Fall of the Empire
The Austrian failure in the battle of Piave contributed decisively to the Empire fall. November 3rd 1918 was set the armistice with Italy that meant the definitive collapse of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. For the villages of the Altopiano started a laborious work of reconstruction.
