Mount Cengio
(m 1354)
Near the
“Locanda dei Granatieri” of Mount Cengio (m 986) along the state
road 349 that drives to Asiago, enter the uphill road along the
southern side and, passing through different remains of military
works and caves, you can reach the highest point near Principe
di Piemonte Square, leaving on the right the diversion for Fort
Corbin. From here the road goes down along the northern side
until the refuge “Al Granatiere”(m 1258) where there is a
parking. From the refuge you walk on one of the most spectacular
mountain paths of the district but quite easy, the “Granatiera”
that owns its name from the Italian grenadiers who during the
Austrian offensive in May 1916 prevent, with furious fightings
hand to hand, the breaking through of the Austrian Arms to the
flatland. The “Granatiera” begins in the lowest point even before
the refuge, goes down with a few turns through the rocks.
Therefore it carries on under the precipice to the Astico
Valley, passing under a lot of tunnels excavated in the rocks.
With soft climbs and flat stretches you can reach a tunnel under
the peak of Mount Cengio with loop holes for the artillery.
Once came out from the tunnel you enter in
the “Sacred Zone” where you can find a monument in memory of
General Giuseppe Pennella, sector commander. After a short
uphill you can reach the Mount Cengio’s peak (m 1354). Carrying
on an easy military road you come back to the refuge and
parking. Veering off in certain points of the path where the
ground allows it, hided in the foliage, you can find tunnels and
emplacements that are really interesting to visit.
Time required:
from 1 to 3 hours depending on the visited emplacements

Fort Corbin
Built
up between 1906 and 1911, the Corbin was conceived with the
function of barrage of the Astico Valley. Its structure is
similar to the typical model of the Italian mountain fortress:
constituted by a main building, with the Artillery emplacements
linked to the powder-magazine and to the external defence works
through a complex system of tunnels. By the entrance there is
the building that hosted the headquarters and guard-room. While,
immediately downstream of the communication trench that gives
access to the main building, there are located two further
service buildings, used as garrison officials facility of the
fort and warehouse, kitchen and general services. Occupied by
the Austrian vanguards on May 29th 1916 during the “Strafexpedition”,
Fort Corbin returned to the Italians the month successive, as
privileged observation point of the Austrian position at Cimone
di Tonezza.

Sacrario
Militare di Asiago
Its high and
impressive shape stands out in the wide surrounding landscape in
perpetual memory of the events that from 1915 to 1918 made of
the Asiago tableland the epicentre
of bloody battles and innumerable heroism.
It is formed by only one squared floor, where
it is possible to find the crypt with the tombs of the Fallens
positioned in loculus along the walls of perimetral and axial
tunnels of which centre there is the Votive Chapel.
In the large terrace above the crypt it is
situated a 47 metres four-sided arch. At four sides of the
terrace, the name of some historically most important tableland
places are engraved and indicated in the parapet of the
balcony. The sanctuary preserves
12.795 identified Fallens in the 1st World War of
which 12 were honoured with a gold medal at M.V., 3 identified
Fallens of the 2nd World War whose names are engraved
in alphabetical order from left to right, in each loculus, as
well as for the mortal remains of 21.491 unknown Fallens
collected in big commun tombs in the central tunnels nearest to
the chapel. In the sanctuary are even
preserved the remains of 19.999 Austrian-Hungarian Fallens, of
which 8.238 identified and not identified and 11.761 unknowns
coming from old war cemeteries located in several Italian towns.
The sanctuary totally contains 54.285 Fallens
of the War 1915-1918 and 3 Fallens of the War 1940-1945.
